Job Description

A cleaner's job description includes cleaning and maintaining assigned areas, such as offices, schools, hospitals, and other commercial buildings: 

 
 
  • Cleaning: Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and polishing floors 
     
  •  
  • Sanitizing: Using disinfectants and bleach to clean and sanitize rooms and restrooms 
     
  •  
  • Stocking: Restocking cleaning supplies, toiletries, and trash cans 
     
  •  
  • Minor maintenance: Replacing toilet seats, unclogging sinks, and other minor maintenance tasks 
     
  •  
  • Reporting: Notifying management of anything that needs to be repaired or replaced 
     
  •  
  • Organizing: Organizing things in an office or store 
     
  •  
Other responsibilities may include: 
 
 
  • Making beds, changing sheets, and distributing clean towels and toiletries
  • Washing kitchen napkins, floor rags, and dusters
  • Maintaining Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) and compliance with universal precautions
  • Transporting dirty linens to the laundry room
  • Restocking rooms with clean linens
 
Some qualifications for a cleaner job include:
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • Valid driver's license
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to follow verbal directions
  • Ability to work well alone and with a team
  • Ability to adapt to changing schedules

  • Physically able to reach, stretch, bend, and walk
